Try Dinghy Racing at the Tarbert Regatta

This Sunday a regatta & family fun day is planned at Tarbert Island. Ashore there will be kids entertainment, bouncy castle & bbq. The schedule of events on the water is:
Cruiser race: 1530
Dinghy race: 1630
Rowing race: 1700
Prizegiving: 1830

For the dinghy race it is intended to run a main fleet and a regatta fleet. The regatta fleet is more relaxed racing, a bit of fun & would be very suitable for beginner racers. FYC will bring down some of the club Topaz boats for anyone who would like to give it a try. Boats will need to be booked in advance in order for the club to make arrangements to transport them. Forecast looks great with light winds. Contact 0873354153 .

HELP Needed for Tues/Sat Sailing & Kayaking

As you are aware the club offer supervised sailing and kayaking on Tuesday evenings (7pm - 9pm) and
Saturday mornings (11am - 1pm).  During the months of June and July safety cover on the water and ashore has been provided by the instructors in the Sailing Academy. However as the Sailing Academy has concluded for 2016 we are now looking for club members to assist.

We would ask members to volunteer for just two sessions during the month. In particular Tuesdays have been very busy. We need cover both on the water in safety boats and ashore. Your help would be appreciated. Contact Elaine on 0873354153 (sailing academy number).

The dates required are:
Dates:  Sat  6th, 20th, 27th
Dates:  Tues 9th, 23rd, 30th

2016 Sailing Academy Concludes

The 2016 Sailing Academy concluded this Friday after running week long ISA accreditated course during June & July. Well done to all the young sailors, ages ranging from 8 years old up to 18 years, who took part. It's fantastic to see the estuary busy with so much activity & we hope to see you all out practicing the skills you learned on the Tuesday or Saturday sailing & back again next year to work through the ISA Small Boat Sailing Scheme levels.

A sincere thanks to all our instructors, volunteers & helpers who will be having a well earned rest next week including Simon, Anna, Michael, Conor, Chris, Peter, Mary, Cian, Breda, Clara, Oisín, Dylan, Tadgh, Elaine & Patrick.

Foynes to Carrigaholt

The Foynes to Carrigaholt due to take place last Saturday was abandoned after the participating boats encountered over 35 knots of wind as they were beating west towards Carrigaholt. The wind against tide together with the cold & rain made for miserable conditions so using VHF to communicate amongst the fleet it was decided to make an about turn & head for home. The race will be rescheduled if a suitable gap in the schedule can be arranged and hopefully the fleet will be greeted with more pleasant conditions next time.

Foynes Sailor Dylan in the Laser 4.7 European Championships

The very best of luck to Dylan Reidy who is one of twelve juniors representing Ireland at the Laser 4.7 European Championships in Crozon in France this week.

This is a fantastic achievement for Dylan. He started sailing at the Sailing Academy four years ago but only purchased his first Laser less than two years ago. Dylan started sailing competitively during the Winter & Spring Laser & Topper Series in Foynes and last year travelled to laser events at various locations around the country.
Entry to the European Championships is restricted and based on results at Regional and National events.

Racing in Crozon began today with two races in light winds and will continue until Friday after which Dylan will have a few days holidays and a well earned rest with his family in France before returning home.

Rest in Peace

Shocked and deeply saddened with the news of our much loved cruiser class captain and good friend Alan McEneff who passed away suddenly this morning. Sincere condolences to his wife Noelle, children Andrew & Lyndsey, family & friends.

Looking through photo's of Alan it would be hard to find one where he's not smiling, such was his character... He is a huge loss to our club and he will be greatly missed by all his friends in the sailing community.

Laser & Topper Series Winter & Spring Sailing Concludes

Thanks to everyone who helped on both on the water & ashore during the winter & spring dinghy series in October, November, February & March. It certainly shortens the winter for all the sailors involved. We could not run these events with the generous assistance of the OOD's & safety boat operators who give up their time every week and get nothing in return. Thanks also to anyone who helped out ashore.... the hot soup & warm rolls is hugely appreciated when the sailors come off the cold Shannon!

The Tuesday & Saturday dinghy sailing will start up in June. Keep an eye on the website & Facebook page for details.
