We have lined up Kenneth Rumball of INSS (Irish National Sailing School) to give us a talk next Wednesday evening at 8:00 pm on "Staying Safe on a Cruising Yacht". Kenneth comes with a huge amount of experience as an offshore and coastal sailor and instructor.  His talk will be focused on the type of cruising and sailing typically done by FYC sailors. It will be an interesting and informative night, not to be missed. A big turnout from the club cruising sailors is expected.  Small charge of €5 will help offset the expense.

James McCormack, former Commodore, honoured at Volvo Irish Sailing Awards

Upwards of 500 people attended the Volvo Irish Sailing Awards 2018 in the RDS in Dublin on Friday the 8th February.  Hosted by Irish Sailing with Afloat Magazine, the Volvo Irish Sailing Awards aim to highlight the breadth of sailing across the Country. Massive CONGRATULATIONS to James McCormack, former Commodore of Foynes Yacht Club, on receiving the Irish Sailing Presidents Award 2018 from Jack Roy for his "Outstanding contribution to, and Leadership of Foynes Yacht Club over many years".  This was a big surprise on the night and to be recognised nationally was a huge honour.  Colm Barrington, former CEO of Aer Lingus and Chairman of the Olympic Council of Ireland was also given an award from the President. Nigel Young & Shane Hughes – North Sails

We were delighted to have Nigel Young and Shane Hughes from North Sails with us last Friday evening giving a talk on "Upwind Trim and Boat Speed".  They gave a fantastic presentation and a lot of notes were taken on the night.  We'll be expecting great things in the future!  The U25 J/24 Team would like to thank everybody who supported their fundraiser and especially Nigel and Shane for giving their time for free.

Our RNLI Quiz will take place at the Club House on Friday 22nd February at 8:30 pm.  We would be grateful of your support for this very worthy cause. The charity that saves lives! Every day of every year, people of all backgrounds get into danger in the water.  These are the problems that the RNLI tackle.  Thanks to the support of brilliant people like you, the RNLI lifeboat crews aided an average of 22 people a day in 2017 and Lifeguards aided 24,044 people.  The seas, beaches and waterways watched over by RNLI lifesavers are enjoyed by millions of people every year, but the water remains an unpredictable environment that can catch people out.  People will always need the RNLI's help and - thanks to you - they will always…

Farewell to Commodore James McCormack

Last Friday saw our Commodore of 5 years, James McCormack, stepping down.  We are so grateful to James for all his hard work and leadership over the last 5 very productive years and for getting Foynes Yacht Club's name out there not only nationally but worldwide.  James started sailing out of Foynes with the late Dick Nash from Newcastle West and PJ Scanlon from Shanagolden and credits his love of sailing to these people and to his late father Joe.  He also had great admiration for the late David Floyd who was a great mentor and who encouraged him to get involved in Foynes Yacht Club all those years ago.   We would like to take this opportunity to CONGRATULATE James on a job well done and wish him well in the future…
