We had previously decided to go to Beal and Cappa on Sunday last but due to the morning being very overcast and the wind direction not being suitable, a decision was made to cruise to Scattery Island and Cappa instead. In all, eleven boats cruised in company. 9 yachts, 3 cruisers and a Dublin Bay Mermaid, in what turned out to be a beautiful day for sailing. It was great to see our teenage mermaid sailors, Oisin, Ross and Tadhg joining us in 114 Nicahpando. They gave a great exhibition of their skills and kept all the sailors entertained on the way. Hopefully a few more mermaid sailors will join us on our next cruise!
First stop was Scattery Island, located approximately one mile off Kilrush. Scattery Island is home to a monastic settlement founded in the early 6th century by St. Senan. Such a beautiful place to walk around, steeped in history, with the ruins of six churches and one of the highest Round Towers in Ireland (120 ft high). Definitely worth the visit.
After an hour or so we sailed on to Cappa. Some decided to go for a swim while others enjoyed the comforts of “The Galleon” and watched the Munster final!
A great day was had by all. Thanks to Ger Reidy for ferrying people in and out of Scattery Island and Cappagh and also Mark McCormack who helped with the ferrying in Cappa. Last but not least, thanks to our Cruising Captain – James for organising a great event.
