Jim Collier RIP – Commodore FYC 1978

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of our esteemed member and former Commodore, Jim Collier, on January 5th.

Jim was Secretary of Foynes Yacht Club for many years and served as Commodore in 1978. From the club’s early years, he was an active and dedicated member until about 15 years ago, when illness prevented him from participating. Jim had a deep love for sailing, especially Mermaids. He was one of the original crew members on the late Mick Synnott’s mermaid “Kilmoon”, now owned by Geoff McDonnell. Later, Jim purchased “Zest” and made countless cherished memories sailing up and down the Shannon Estuary and enjoying weekly club races with his crew, Trevor Browne and Des O’Sullivan. The overnight trips to Kilrush were a highlight for Jim, with boats tying up at Cappa Pier, and refreshments in the Galleon, leading to unforgettable evenings of camaraderie and fun.

In his later years, Jim was unable to continue sailing “Zest” and passed it on to another club member, Bev Lowes.

Jim also played a pivotal role off the water. He was part of the committee responsible for overseeing the construction of the clubhouse, slipway, and ensuring the club’s financial stability. From organising Mermaid and other Sailing Events to hosting Saturday night dances to raise funds, Jim’s contributions helped shape the vibrant club we enjoy today. We remain deeply grateful for his efforts and for the dedication of all the earlier Commodores and Committees who worked alongside him.

Jim was a true gentleman and a treasured member of our Club. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife Terry, his sons; Joe and Mark, his daughters; Susanne and Una, and his close friends; Trevor Browne, Des O’Sullivan, and Geoff McDonnell.

Fair winds and following seas, Jim.
